In recent times the political temperature of the country has been quite high, almost at boiling point; but, rather than the usual expectation for political leaders like governors and senators to migrate to the opposition political party as an alternative platform, we are consistently witnessing a pull towards the ruling All Progressives Congress(APC). Let’s not forget that the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had never failed to use any available opportunity to malign the All Progressives Congress and the President Muhammadu Buhari administration. In doing so they seemed to have lost touch with reality and behaved as a people with short memories.

Losing touch with reality implies that the numerous infrastructural amenities that dot the length and breadth of the country do not attract their attention, and behaving as a people with short memory meant that they quickly forgot that during their sixteen unbroken years in government, they bequeathed to the people poverty, and invariably unleashed insecurity that festered around the country.
So what is the attraction in the ruling All Progressives Congress for the PDP serving Governors? First we must admit that the PDP governance style of profligacy and flagrant dissipation of public funds is not tolerated in the present dispensation as President Muhammadu Buhari’s body language and aversion to corruption have finally redirected the country to purposeful leadership, and which is already yielding visible results and acclaim across the country.
While it may be in the realm of political scientists and scholars to tinker with the raison d etre for the mass defection from an opposition party to a ruling party, which in itself seems abnormal, yet we are constrained to admit that the good governance being experienced under the present administration is at the apex of the many discernible reasons for such defections.
Lest we forget, under the Buhari administration we are seeing trains running in Nigeria again since the early 80’s as the rail lines have been rehabilitated and new ones constructed. Abuja-Kaduna rail line, Warri-Itakpe rail line and Lagos-Ibadan rail lines have been constructed and now operating commercial services on a daily basis. As we are all aware, more rail lines are in the pipeline.
Conversely, despite the humongous resources at the disposal of the past PDP administrations in terms of oil earnings, there are no landmark projects or achievements they can be credited with. Perhaps the palpable fear of being confronted with their ugly past side by side the numerous achievements of the Buhari administration by the electorate in 2023, has dawned on them, and now they  have no choice than to align with the All Progressives Congress.
One can also infer that there is no compulsion in the unfolding melodrama of PDP Governors’ defection to the ruling party as the President is already in his second term and has barely two years to sign off as the helmsman. However what is manifest in the choice of the defectors is that they have chosen to associate with a successful administration whose focus is unmistaken-holistic selfless service to the people.
In terms of other concrete achievements by the Buhari administration, even the doubting Thomases will attest to the positive changes in the agricultural sector, and the country’s highways being constructed and reconstructed in the six geo-political zones. These are tangible projects that are already impacting on the country’s economy which, though jolted by the Covid 19 pandemic and two recessions, yet has on account of prudent management remained resilient and buoyant. Against the criticism of too much borrowing being peddled by the opposition PDP, it is still explicable that such borrowings are tied to specific infrastructural projects that have the capacity to rejuvenate the economy.
Additionally, there are several life-changing social investment programmes that have been initiated and executed by the Buhari administration aimed at impacting on the lives and well-being of the youths, and it is possible the defectors are being attracted to the ruling party based on the feedback from their own constituents.
On the whole it can be deduced that the persona of the President, which easily translates to projects and good governance, have added to inspire the PDP governors and senators who are now defecting to the ruling All Progressives Congress.
