#Edo2016:.The Police in Benin City have arrested 13 suspected militants who were brought in as mercenaries to disrupt the Edo election according to reports coming in from the Zone 5 Police Command in Benin. The report states that the militants were arrested at an undisclosed hotel in Benin and another 41 “individuals of dubious intent”, as the Police source described them in Iyamare quarters Riverside in Ovia South West Local Government of the state. The source further reported that most of those arrested were dressed in fake military uniforms with sophisticated weapons and large amounts of cash totalling almost N9 million Naira.
It will be recalled that the Independent National Electoral Commission had on the 5th of September announced a two week postponement of the earlier slated guber polls of September 10th, acting on a security report from the Nigerian Police and Department of State Security that there could be a possibility of a Rivers type election which saw unprecedented violence and bloodshed that resulted in the the cancellation of elections in many constituencies.
The report’s contents of which have been leaked the Press confirmed claims by the Governor Adams Oshiomhole that his state had been invaded by fake voters and militants from the neighbouring PDP controlled states of Ondo, Ekiti, Delta and Bayelsa .
Sources stated that the invading militants were led by a certain General Atake “Fine Face” who was reportedly arrested at a highbrow hotel on Airport Road allegedly owned by the wife of former PDP governor Chief Lucky Igbinedion. The coordinated raids and arrest were carried out by officers of the Inspector General Special Task Force and assisted by the State Operation Thunder Storm.
As at press time, it was understood that all attempts at securing bail for Atake by the Esama of Benin Chief Gabriel Igbinedion who claimed that the was in town attend his 82nd birthday celebrations which starts today, have been rebuffed by the police authorities.
